This photo of learners in a grass classroom is trending in Zimbabwe. I am not sure if it was shot in Zimbabwe or not.
This photo reminded me of my days at Dzimaihwe Primary School in Hurungwe District in 2012 with my 48 Grade 4B learners under a Mupondo tree. These ones in a grass classroom are better because they have a roof over their head and many are under a tree. Surprising? When rain came, we would run to into another classroom which was Grade 4A. Since I was a junior, I was left with all of them, a total of 88 kids. I used to have 88 learners in my class anyway since I was sharing the class with the school head who happened to be busy most of the time.
Zimbabwe’s government, parents, companies, churches, and NGOs should build schools (classrooms) in rural areas. The Ministry should make sure that the schools are well-staffed and the teachers are well-compensated. (From this picture (don’t mind the ones cut out), how many kids do you see (around 60)? One teacher is teaching them all, instead of having a standard of between 25 to 40 kids in a class.
Me and you have a big job. Asante sana.
